Car makers aren’t deliberately trying to set new challenges for refinish painters when they introduce exotic new colours PPG says.

They know that standout finishes attract attention and are a great selling tool but that doesn’t make it any easier when these vehicles arrive in your paint shop. What modern collision repair centres need is all the tools required to achieve an invisible repair and that includes the appropriate tinters. Clear lines of communication between the company’s internal OEM Team and Refinish Team, means that whenever a new colour or finish is released, PPG is able to introduce new tinters or make adjustments so that refinish customers can make a fast and effective repair in their paint shop.

The latest example is PPG’s release of VM4350 Vivid Ruby Tinter. This ‘limited use toner’ has initially been made available specifically to repair Ford’s ‘Ruby Red’ colour which is being used on cars and SUVs, however other vehicle brands are expected to use it in similar colours in the not too distant future. It’s actually a three-layer finish with a difference which uses a pigmented clearcoat to produce a clean ‘candy apple’ red effect. Just like the original factory finish, VM4350 Vivid Ruby Tinter also features PPG’s cutting-edge ANDARO tint dispersion technology. This innovative, PPG-developed technology provides the ability to achieve deep, pure and more chromatic colours than is possible with traditional pigments. In recognition of its special effects formulation, VM4350 Vivid Ruby Tinter has been released under the VIBRANCE COLLECTION branding.

Along with VM4350 Vivid Ruby Tinter, PPG has also created a specific repair process which can be used with either the ENVIROBASE High Performance waterborne basecoat system or the GLOBAL REFINISH SYSTEM BC basecoat system. This refinish method consists of a three-layer process starting with a red metallic groundcoat layer followed by a tinted translucent mid-coat layer and a final clearcoat layer. The tinted translucent mid-coat layer is made by mixing VM4350 Vivid Ruby Tinter with the recommended clearcoat for the paint system being used. Specific formulas for the groundcoat and the tinted mid-coat layer are available in PPG’s PAINTMANAGER software.
