A Datsun 1200 ute made famous through Repco's popular Gets You Goin' advertising campaign has completed an impressive transformation and is now set to begin a new chapter, with the automotive retailer giving the vehicle away to one lucky customer.

The vehicle, affectionately known as the "Repco Datto", featured prominently in the Dreamin' instalment of Repco's television advertising series, where it appeared as an unfinished project car sitting on axle stands with no engine and a partially completed flame paint scheme. The advertisement captured a familiar scene for automotive enthusiasts – dreaming about the day a long-term project finally hits the road.

Following its television appearance, the Datsun underwent a comprehensive restoration and modification program led by Repco brand ambassador Gary Reid from Showtime. The project was documented through a four-part YouTube series, allowing enthusiasts to follow the transformation from unfinished project to completed street machine.

According to Repco Executive General Manager of Marketing Mitch Wiley, the project was designed to celebrate the passion that drives car enthusiasts across Australia and New Zealand.

"The Repco Datto Resto is a nod to every car enthusiast creating the car they love," Wiley said.

He explained that the project aligned closely with Repco's Gets You Goin' campaign, which focuses on the enthusiasm many motorists have for their dream cars and restoration projects.

The restoration involved a number of specialist tradespeople and local businesses, with Repco supplying much of the equipment and components used throughout the build. The completed vehicle now bears little resemblance to the unfinished project featured in the original advertisement.

Wiley said many of the vehicles featured throughout the Gets You Goin' campaign are owned by Repco team members, highlighting the strong connection between the company's staff and its customer base.

"It shows that our team are the same people as our customers. They're dedicated car enthusiasts with the same knowledge and passion," he said.

Rather than placing the restored vehicle on display, Repco has opted to give the Datto away. Customers who spend $100 or more on participating brands during June as members of the Repco Rewards program will go into the draw to win the fully restored ute.

For enthusiasts, it marks the latest chapter in a project that celebrates Australia's enduring passion for project cars and automotive culture.
