Each year, BASF’s Coatings division unveils a new collection of colours designed to inspire automotive designers worldwide. The 2024-2025 Automotive Colour Trends collection, titled “ROUTING,” draws inspiration from the concept of routing in communication technology, which represents how information is transmitted.
Mark Gutjahr, BASF’s global head of Automotive Colour Design, explains, “In our trend research, we've seen that the way we interact with both human and non-human intelligence is a key driver for new trends. Communication is dynamic and evolving—just like color.”
ROUTING captures the evolving nature of communication through a vibrant palette, with insights from BASF’s design experts backing it. This year's trends feature new reds with intense purple shades, signifying a shift rom darker and blueish reds. The dark achromatic colours have been energised by intense colour effects, offering dynamism beyond solid black. Fine metallic effects are particularly characterised by strong effects on the surface, which give metallics new radiance. The spectrum of pastel colours continues to diversify, for example in beige and light green tones already available in the market, as well as in unusual intermediatetones.
Sustainability remains central, with many colours in the ROUTING collection made from renewable, recycled, or bio-based materials. These designs are optimised for sensor-based driving systems, and automotive manufacturers can expect to see these colours on vehicles within three to five years.
Regional highlights include HARBINGER’S INK, SCINTILLATION, and HOLDING SWAY, each embodying sustainability and cutting-edge design in EMEA, Asia Pacific, and the Americas, respectively.
SCINTILLATION in Asia Pacific features metallic and sustainable concepts on a new path. SCINTILLATION stands out in Asia Pacific with its smart warm grey and liquid metal effect designed by a novel, low-emission basecoat technology. This colour implies the future affinity between human and non-human intelligence, and enhances the brand value of high-end vehicles and their quality and sustainability.
