The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) is encouraging automotive businesses across the state to take advantage of a new leadership development initiative aimed at strengthening workplace culture, improving staff retention and building more inclusive teams.

The Shifting Gears for Change program is a fully subsidised online masterclass series designed specifically for automotive business owners, managers and emerging leaders. Supported by the Queensland Government, the program will deliver practical leadership training across four interactive sessions commencing in 2026.

While the initiative has been developed to help businesses better attract, support and retain women within the automotive industry, organisers stress that the program is relevant for leaders of all genders and workplace types. The focus is on equipping participants with practical skills that can help create stronger businesses and more effective teams.

The masterclass series will cover a range of topics, including inclusive recruitment practices, workplace culture and behaviour, pay equity, mentoring, leadership development and staff retention strategies. Participants will also gain insights into building high-performing teams and creating workplace environments where employees can thrive.

Delivered through four 90-minute online sessions scheduled monthly, the program has been designed to minimise disruption to day-to-day business operations while allowing participants to progressively develop and apply new skills.

MTA Queensland is encouraging businesses to enrol multiple participants where possible, enabling organisations to build leadership capability across their teams and maximise the long-term benefits of the training.

With workforce attraction and retention continuing to be key challenges for many automotive businesses, programs such as Shifting Gears for Change provide an opportunity for industry leaders to invest in their people and strengthen their organisations for the future.

The program is free to participants and available to automotive businesses throughout Queensland.
