Fleurieu Crash Repairs has celebrated a major milestone, marking its 40th anniversary on September 15 with a night of reflection, celebration, and the recognition of founder Brenton Abbott’s retirement.

The Victor Harbour-based business began in 1985 when Brenton, having completed his apprenticeship under his father Gordon, opened his own body shop. The decision came with a personal pact: if the business succeeded, he and his fiancée Meredith would marry. Twelve months later, with the shop thriving, the couple tied the knot – and the business never looked back.

Over the years, Fleurieu Crash Repairs expanded steadily, taking on apprentices annually and growing to a team of seven. A major leap came in 2008 with the expansion of its site from 1,000sqm to 3,300sqm, allowing for a larger workshop, increased storage, undercover facilities, and a modernised office and reception.

Today, the company is in the hands of Brenton’s son Ben, who has stepped into full management as Brenton enjoys retirement. Ben said the business is now “probably running on 12 cylinders,” with investments in advanced ADAS and EV battery equipment, EV and hybrid-certified technicians, and expanded storage making Fleurieu one of the largest crash repairers in the region outside of Adelaide.

“By not locking ourselves into exclusive insurer agreements, we’ve been able to prioritise local customers, keep turnaround times down, and maintain a strong mix of private and insurance work,” Ben said.

“That’s been really important in keeping the business profitable and community-focused.”

To celebrate the anniversary, Fleurieu Crash Repairs hosted a function on September 12, welcoming around 100 guests including family, friends, suppliers, and long-time supporters. The night featured speeches, a catered dinner, memorabilia displays, and a retirement tribute to Brenton, highlighting more than 50 years of crash repair history in the Abbott family.

As Fleurieu looks to the future, Ben said the business is well-placed to meet growing demand in the fast-developing Fleurieu Peninsula region. With expanded facilities and cutting-edge equipment, the company is prepared to keep pace with modern vehicles and ensure the community has reliable, local crash repair services for decades to come.

“Dad built the business with a focus on quality and trust,” Ben said.

“It’s something I’ve grown up with and something I’ll continue to carry forward into the next 40 years.”
