BYD, a leader in new energy vehicles, has confirmed a number of significant Australian milestones – including new monthly and yearly sales records and reaching number five in Australia in record time.

In June, BYD delivered 8,156 vehicles – a 368 per cent increase from the 1,743 vehicles delivered in June last year. The brand recorded an almost 70 per cent increase on its previous monthly record of 4,811 vehicles, set in March this year, and achieved a 6.7 per cent market share.

The incredible interest from Australian customers means BYD has already eclipsed the 20,458 vehicles sold in all of 2024, in just six verified months of 2025.

A hugely popular addition to the BYD range after its launch in October last year, the BYD Shark 6 also surpassed 10,000 in total sales.

June also marked the final month of EVDirect’s role as BYD’s local distributor. Under the leadership of Luke Todd, EVDirect played a significant role in launching BYD passenger vehicles and expediting BYD’s growth in the Australian market, rapidly building the brand and laying a strong foundation.

“With each month, you can see just how popular BYD vehicles are becoming in Australia because you can see them on our roads,” BYD Australia COO, Stephen Collins, said.

“As we continue the transition to a fully-factory backed operation, we commend the foundation laid by our distribution partners as we strive to ensure this strong growth continues.”

EVDirect CEO Luke Todd explained his organisation set out to bring affordable, world-class EVs to Australians and grow the BYD brand as fast as possible.

“What we’ve achieved in just a few short years is remarkable, and now, as we hand over to BYD directly, we’re confident the momentum will only accelerate from here,” he said.

Meanwhile, GWM has continued its upward trajectory in 2025, posting its best-ever monthly result in June and delivering a record-breaking half-year performance that continues to cement its position as one of the fastest-growing automotive brands in Australia.

June’s result marked a monumental achievement for the brand, achieving its highest monthly sales since entering the Australian market, some 16 years ago. According to VFACTS national sales data, GWM delivered 5,464 vehicles in June 2025, securing a record 4.5 per cent share of the Australian market and achieving seventh position. This monthly result marks a 30.9 per cent increase over the same month last year but also an increase of 24.4 per cent compared with the brand’s previous record, recently set in March 2025.

June also capped off a standout first half result, with GWM’s cumulative 2025 of 25,189 exceeding all previous half-year benchmarks, with VFACTS highlighting that GWM remains on pace to deliver over 50,000 units for 2025. GWM sales are now up 17 per cent YTD against an industry that has declined by 3.7 per cent over the same period.

GWM says its momentum continues to be fuelled by a strong and diverse model lineup, with solid growth across both traditional ICE and new energy powertrains. Hybrids and recently introduced PHEV models remain key pillars for growth, as more Australian buyers embrace sustainable mobility without sacrificing performance or everyday practicality.
