Testing the Car-o-liner Medium Frequency Spot Welder
BenchtestMost body repair workshops would have a spot welder, but is the welder that you have capable of welding the new types of steels found in the modern motor car? Some of these steels such as boron have to be preheated with the spot welder before a spot weld is done That amounts to two welds: one to preheat and one to weld. The Car-o-liner CR 500 spot welder is perfect for all types of steels that are used in today?s cars. Aluminium can also be welded with this type of spot welder.
The CR500 that I tested was air cooled, but Car-o-liner also makes water cooled spot welders. The compressed air cooled unit will do up to 250 spot welds without overheating, which means in our industry there would not be any overheating problems since most welding on a car would not exceed 50 welds at one time. The unit is also equipped with overheat protection. The power transformer is permanently cooled by a fan on the side of the welding cabinet. The welding cables and welding gun are cooled by compressed air blowing through the cables. The cable cooling system is controlled by electro-valves sending compressed air from the pneumatic air network.
The welding system consists of a welder unit fitted with a multi-function gun and a spot gun as well. The unit has a unique control panel that lets you manage the entire welding process. It also comes with four welding cables to provide quick access to many types of welding without switching tools. This promotes efficient and rapid welding.
The CR 500 is designed to handle two sided welding, single sided welding, spot hammer welding, nuts and bolts welding, carbon shrinking, contact shrinking, moulding clip and rivet welding. Also the CR500 offers 11 different operating modes, each having up to 25 programs. The operating modes and their programs as well as the air pressure are easily set on the control panel. The CR500 handles all types of welding. When a satisfactory weld is made the unit emits a beep sound. No beep means an unsatisfactory weld; this is the same as most other types of inverter spot welders. Extension yokes are available in different sizes which means you can even weld across a floor panel with a 600mm yoke.
Another feature of the CR500 is that the spot gun has a built in pneumatic feature that presses the welding tips together automatically when triggered. Compression is an important ingredient in a good resistance weld. Compression is adjustable from the control panel. By automatically applying pressure after the current shuts off makes the weld cool down under pressure and therefore form a hardened and stronger bond. This feature is included in the CR500?s weld control program and is engaged automatically after the weld has started.
The CR500 is a quality unit and can be used for all applications in the smash repair industry. Without this type of inverter welder you will not be able to successfully weld the new types of steel that are found in today?s cars. The unit is also approved by BMW.
