AAMI/AP&P AUTOBODY REPAIRER OF THE YEAR REGIONAL WINNER (NEW SHOP) NSW.
Scientific Motor Body Works
Four years in the planning and building, Scientific Body Works in the Sydney suburb of Matraville has elevated the level of smash repairs in NSW.
Already with Australia's biggest single shop in Broadway (it employs 95 people repairing mostly prestige cars)father Michael and son Daniel Zammit set out to establish the Matraville shop as a repairer of family sedans. But it hasn't quite worked out like that. Although they will happily repair family cars, rhe prestige market keeps filling both shops with work. At the new shop you'll lots of Jaguars, BMWs and Mercedes because Scientific's quality attracts them. Having waid that, the shop still repairs what ever comes along
"A Toyota is just as valuable to its owner is a Mercedes is to its owner,' Michael Zammit says. "So in a way, every car is prestige."
In another unexpected move, Matraville has become the communications centre both shops to give Broadway more time for direct customer contact. Even the famous staff gymnasium now sits upstairs in Matraville, sharing the space with sumptuously appointed offices, meeting rooms and administration services.
The new shop is spacious and logically set out. One building houses estimating and completed vehicles, while there are separate, but adjacent buildings for panel work and prep/painting.
The two Lowbake booths are oversize (8 metres X 4.5 metres)to take a car body and separate panels together. The mixing room has ventilated stainless steel benches to house Standox refinish products. The five Lowbake prep bays are full downdraft and individually equipped with infrared drying.
Alighment relies on two Jolift small benches with some floor racks, but when extra pulling power is needed Matraville and Broadway share the Celette machines.
The new shop is probably better set up for car washing than any shop in Australia. It has three separate washing bays and uses its own water harvested from the roof.
Like Broadway, Matraville is a factory approved repairer for Lexus, BMW, Volvo, Jaguar and Saab. Recently it was appointed as Subaru repairer and has become its biggest user of spare parts.
Michael Zammit said that the location of the new shop had been carefully planned, being only minutes from Sydney airport and in close proximity to a great number of eastern suburbs ? where much of its work comes from. The company encourages customers to leave their cars for repair on the way to the airport. If they want to wait while a job is done, they have use of the gym, luxurious customer lounge with desks and internet, or television. They can also take a shower in the new bathrooms.
