Bodyworks of Perth owner John Igglesden believes providing good customer service and quality of work to the rural residents in northern Tasmania helped the business take out this year's state body repairer of the year.

The Tasmanian Automobile Chamber of Commerce runs the state awards across all sectors of the industry.

Bodyworks of Perth, which was runner-up in 2008, is located about 15 minutes from Launceston.

"It's a small town community," Igglesden said.

The business was started in 1993 and undertakes general smash repairs; 85 to 90 per cent of the work is insurance work, according to Igglesden.

They are a AAMI preferred repairer, which provides some of the work, as well as work for CGU, Allianz and Wesfarmers.

There are eight people working at the shop; three panel beaters, three spray painters and two in the office. This includes one apprentice panel beater an two apprentice spray painters.

Lowbake booth and mixing room have been installed and they use IRT infrared equipment and paint with Protec products. Management is undertaken with car Quote.

They use a Korek floor system from Blackhawk for gigging and pulling.

Igglesden said this system suited his 502 square meter workshop, as it can be easily packed away when there is no need for pulling or measuring and the floor space used for other work. He said they turn over an average of 12 cars a week.

In winning the award, Igglesden said they "ticket the boxes" when it came to OH&S requirements, customer service and workshop presentation.

He has also undertaken a diploma in small business which he believes helped put the business in a good light with the judges.
