Volkswagen Group (VW) has reportedly embarked on a mission to secure a million units of electric and plug-in hybrid sales by 2025.

The car manufacturer has set the target in a bid to meet carbon dioxide emission limits. As such it will increase its current electric and plug-in models from nine to 20 by 2020.

VW head of complete vehicle development for electrified cars, Thomas Liber, said that strict limits on carbon emissions means the brand must comply with new standards and boost its current offering.

β€œIt’s simple – the CO2 legislation in the various regions will mean every OEM is compelled to offer e-mobility.”

VW is set to build up to 75,000 battery electric and plug-in hybrids per year in line with demand.
