Standox has launched it VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 and the accompanying Express Prep Wipes U3000.

Thanks to its fast application and short drying times, the filler can significantly simplify and improve work processes, something that is of interest to most bodyshops.

Paul Polverino, national training manager for Axalta Coating Systems in Australia, shares his application tips.

"The VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 is not just a product; it also represents an innovation in the refinish application process," Polverino says.

"It offers a quantum leap in process times, particularly for bodyshops with a high throughput.

"The effect is compounded if the filler is used together with Standocryl VOC Xtreme Clear K9580, resulting in an even greater time saving, while still producing excellent quality results. The following tips will provide a significant change in the preparation process helping to ensure an outstanding finish."

Tip 1: Follow the Datasheets Precisely

Two steps in the application of the VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 differ significantly from that of other High Solids fillers: the first is the application of corrosion protection using the pre-treatment wipes and the second is the early sanding after 20 minutes air drying, depending on the relative air humidity. Experienced refinishers will find both instructions unusual. It is very important, therefore, that they adhere carefully to the datasheet specifications to help ensure an outstanding result.

Tip 2: Choose a Small Nozzle

Many refinishers do the filling in the same location where they carry out the pre-treatment. With its low viscosity yet high solids content, the VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 can be applied with a smaller nozzle, for example 1.4mm, at reduced pressure. This creates less spray mist and results in a flat spray, which later reduces the effort required for sanding.

Tip 3: Spray Thinly Over Putty Areas

Small putty areas should initially be coated with a light spray pass that should then be flashed-off to a matt finish. It is then possible to apply up to three further spray passes in a single application step without flash-off.

Tip 4: No Weekend Drying

The great advantage of the VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 is the ability to continue working quickly. But this also means it should not be dried over the weekend, as other fillers often are. That is because the material will harden to such an extent that it becomes difficult to sand and the sanding paper will wear out faster. As a rule of thumb, the filler should be overcoated within 72 hours.

Tip 5: Speed Only when Necessary

The VOC Xtreme Filler U7600 is designed to optimise work processes and to make them more economical. These characteristics make it particularly suitable for bodyshops with a high throughput or with large numbers of small damage repairs every day. So, for jobs where speed is not of the essence, such as classic car repairs for example, use Standox products, such as the Standox VOC Xtra Filler U7560.
