Self-driving car company Waymo has announced it will remove the need for a human safety driving and give the public access to its fleet.

Reports reveal the company, owned by Google parent company Alphabet, said it would no longer need the protection of a human safety driver.

Over the coming months, the service will be made available in the US state of Arizona, with Waymo employees riding in the back with customers initially.

The driverless technology has already demonstrated success, completing short, pre-defined routes.
