Toyota has recorded fuel saving figures from its hybrid fleet.

Its parent company in Japan has revealed that the total fuel saving across its nine million Toyota Lexus hybrids averages at around 2,770 litres per vehicle compared with petrol-only cars of a similar size.

According to the figures, the fuel savings would provide enough fuel for each vehicle to travel 52,000km based on a nominal average consumption of 5.3 litres per 100km.

In addition around 67 million tonnes of carbon emissions have been spared as a result of the hybrids.

Toyota Australia executive Tony Cramb believes that hybrids are becoming an increasingly popular option among consumers.

"Toyota's hybrid vehicles are renowned for their performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs as well as their contribution to the environment and to saving precious fossil fuels.”

Toyota will introduce its Corolla hybrid to Australia early in the second half of the year.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company's Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model.
