A donkey in Germany has landed its owner in hot water after the animal mistook an orange coloured McLaren for a carrot.

Vitus the donkey managed to cause upwards of $35,000 in damages after munching down on the $300,000 sports car.

Markus Zahn left his car parked next to Vitus' paddock last year, upon returning to his vehicle he noticed the animal nibbling on his fender.

"I looked into the rear-view mirror and suddenly saw a pair of fluffy ears! And then I heard a strange sound.

"The sound came from a donkey, who was gnawing at my fender. The donkey probably thought the car was a carrot on wheels. I'm not mad at him," he told German newspaper Bild.

Unfortunately for Vitus' owner, he ended up in court this month as part of a trail to determine who was responsible for damages.

Even though the McLaren dealer footed most of the repair bill, a remaining $7,000 was charged to the donkey owner after Zahn's insurer refused to pay the remaining costs.
