Implementing 5S: Smarter, Safer Workshops – a tech tip brought to you by Axalta Drivus
The 5S methodology is a structured approach to creating a clean, organised and efficient workplace – and it’s as relevant in today’s collision repair industry as ever. By following its five steps, businesses can reduce waste, improve safety, and deliver quality repairs faster and more cost-effectively.
The objectives of 5S are simple: eliminate wasted motion, build disciplined work habits, create a clean and organised workspace, and spot problems immediately.
Here’s how it works:
SORT – Remove all unnecessary items from the workspace. Use red tags for what’s not needed, yellow for what needs repair. Everyone, from management to the workshop floor, must be involved.
SHINE – Establish a baseline of cleanliness. Clean everything: tools, fans, vents, booths, walls and floors. Then maintain daily ‘shine’ checks with a visual schedule.
SET IN ORDER – Study workflow to decide the best place for each tool. Use visual controls and ensure designated areas are easy to clean and maintain.
STANDARDISE – Document and display standards like SOPs and cleaning schedules. Regular inspections and reminders keep everyone accountable.
SUSTAIN – The hardest step! Building habits takes discipline of at least 21 days of consistent reinforcement. Leaders must set an example by maintaining their own work areas.
Some businesses also talk about a sixth ‘S’: SAFETY. Whether you see it as part of each step or as a standalone priority, safety underpins the success of 5S and ensures employees and customers are protected.
At its core, 5S is more than just ‘tidying up’. It drives productivity, efficiency and safety, helping workshops deliver quality repairs in the shortest time at the most competitive price.
