Sydney and Melbourne have been ranked among the world’s most luxury car-obsessed cities, according to new global research from Stratstone.

The study, which analysed more than 3.6 million monthly Google searches across 50 of the world’s wealthiest cities, found Sydney generated 155,440 monthly searches for luxury and hypercar brands, placing it fifth globally, while Melbourne ranked sixth with 131,210 searches.

Both cities finished ahead of major international markets including Mumbai, Los Angeles, Madrid and Toronto, highlighting Australia’s strong appetite for prestige automotive brands.

Only London, Paris, Milan and New York City ranked ahead of Sydney, with London leading the global list on 270,220 monthly searches.

A spokesperson for Stratstone said luxury vehicles continued to hold strong appeal across affluent markets.

“Luxury cars have long been a symbol of status, style and performance, but interest in these vehicles varies significantly across the world,” the spokesperson said.

“This data shows where supercars dominate public imagination, and gives a fascinating insight into global automotive culture, from heritage brands like Ferrari and Porsche to rising stars like GMA (niche British manufacturer Gordon Murray Automotive) and (EV hypercar brand) Rimac.”

The research also named Porsche as the world’s favourite luxury car brand, attracting almost 689,000 monthly searches across the cities analysed.

Lamborghini ranked second with more than 484,000 monthly searches, followed by Ferrari on more than 428,000.

British hypercar manufacturer Gordon Murray Automotive, better known as GMA, placed fourth overall with 354,500 searches and ranked first in cities including New York, Sydney and Melbourne.

The report said this reflected growing interest in niche, high-performance marques and exclusivity-driven ownership.

According to Stratstone, Porsche’s popularity is driven by its strong motorsport heritage, distinctive design and broad model range spanning both petrol and electric vehicles.

The study used Google Keyword Planner data collected between July 2024 and June 2025 and examined search interest across 14 luxury and hypercar brands, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, McLaren and Rolls-Royce.
