Over three days of intense competition at the MTAQ facility in South Brisbane at the 2025 WorldSkills Australia National Championships – held in Brisbane from June 12-14 – nine regional finalists tackled a range of real-world practical tasks in the Automotive Refinishing category. From surface preparation and colour matching to clearcoat application and final detailing, each challenge tested their technical knowledge, precision, and time management.

Benjamin Millen of Central VIC claimed the Gold medal following an outstanding performance, impressing judges with his consistency, accuracy, and professional approach. Silver and Bronze were awarded to Max Hodges (Sydney NSW) and Samuel Shedden (Sydney West NSW), both of whom delivered high-quality work under pressure. The Medallion for Excellence award went to Connor Galeski (MTA NSW).

Axalta honoured the late Stuart Aisbett - former Skillaroo, 2007 WorldSkills International Silver medallist, and valued team member – with the Stuart Aisbett Award. Created in his memory following his sudden passing in 2020 from Unexplained Cardiac Death (UCD), the award recognises not just technical skill throughout the competition, but also the qualities Stuart embodied: attitude, respect, support, and work ethic. This year’s recipient was Ronil Naidu of Melbourne VIC.

Unexplained Cardiac Death (UCD) is a sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest in young, healthy people. In many cases, there are no symptoms and there is little information on why it occurs. UCD is one of the biggest killers of Australians aged under 50 – men are five times more likely to be affected than women. It kills more young people than cancer and road accidents.

Paul Polverino, Axalta’s National Training Manager, said the competition was hotly contested and shows there is plenty of automotive skills to be nurtured in the next generation.

“It’s always inspiring to watch young talent in action, and this year’s competitors really raised the bar,” he said.

“The standard of work we’ve seen reflects a bright future for the industry. Axalta is incredibly proud to support these apprentices, not just through sponsorship but through a shared passion for skills development and excellence.”

With another successful championship wrapped up, Australia’s top refinish apprentices have not only showcased their skill, but also their drive to lead the future of the industry.

Axalta Coating Systems played an active role in the event as a proud category partner. Along with supplying premium Standox products for the competition, the team provided in-person technical support, helping competitors with the tools and guidance needed to do their best.

Outside the competition area, Axalta hosted the Try’a Skill booth at Skills Show Australia 2025. The hands-on virtual spray-painting simulator gave students, teachers and parents a fun and accessible way to try the trade. The booth drew strong interest across all three days and helped spark curiosity about a career in vehicle painting.
