New data suggests Australia’s EV boom isn’t being driven by inner-city early adopters—but by tradies and families in the outer suburbs.
Figures from the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) show outer-suburban postcodes dominated EV purchases through novated leasing in 2025, driven by the federal government’s Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption.
The trend comes as fuel prices climb and the government reviews the future of the EV incentive.

NALSPA CEO Rohan Martin said the data shows EVs are gaining traction where it arguably matters most—among drivers doing longer commutes.
“Australians in the outer suburbs often travel further and are more likely to have off-street parking and solar, which makes EV ownership more practical,” he said.
He added that continued support will be critical to maintaining momentum. “We cannot increase EV uptake further, especially during this early adoption phase, without continued targeted demand-side incentives—that's the stark reality. The EV Discount is more than proving its worth but there is still much heavy lifting to be done.
“With the transport sector set to become Australia’s largest source of emissions by 2030, increasing EV uptake is absolutely crucial.”
For the collision repair industry, the shift is another sign that EVs are moving firmly into the mainstream—meaning more electric vehicles will be finding their way into workshops, not just in metro areas but across suburban and regional markets.
