Nissan's automotive skills program, Nissan Mentored Apprenticeship Program (NISSMAP), has won the Australian Apprenticeships Employer Award at the 2016 Australian Training Awards.

Those considered for the award were judged on areas such as leadership in vocational education and collaboration with stakeholders.

NISSMAP, which is co-developed between Nissan Australia and WPC Group, is a competency-based accelerated apprenticeship qualification. The program can be completed in 2.8 years, compared to the usual 4 for other automotive apprenticeships.

Commenting on the win Nissan Australia’s managing director and CEO Richard Emery said it was great to be recognised for their program, with training being such an important issue in the industry.

“The need to develop the next generation of automotive technical staff is widely acknowledged as one of our industry’s biggest challenges and NISSMAP is producing skilled and motivated Nissan technicians not only for our national dealership network but our wider industry.”

The program is delivered through TAFE facilities across the country in tandem with the Nissan Learning Academy. Before commencing training, NISSMAP apprentices are matched with a dedicated one-on-one mentor from WPC Group.
