Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) says it welcomes the announcement of the new Albanese Government Ministry and extends its congratulations to all Ministers on their appointments.
MTAA declares that as the national voice of Australia’s automotive retail, repair and service sector, it looks forward to engaging with the newly formed Cabinet to advance key reforms that support a strong, skilled, and sustainable automotive industry.
MTAA interim executive director Rod Camm said the organisation is committed to working collaboratively with the Albanese Government to address the pressing challenges facing the sector and seize emerging opportunities presented by the automotive transition.
"We welcome the continuity provided by returning Ministers and look forward to building productive relationships with newly appointed portfolio leaders," Camm said.
"The automotive industry is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation, and government has a vital role to play in ensuring we maintain workforce capability, consumer protections, and fair operating conditions for thousands of small and family-owned businesses across the country."
MTAA identified the following as priority areas for early engagement with the new Ministry:
- Reforming automotive-specific regulatory frameworks, including franchising, the MVIRI Code, and right to repair
- Automotive taxation reform, including the removal of the Luxury Car Tax, extension of Fringe Benefits Tax concessions for low- and zero-emission vehicles, and review of road user charges and import tariffs
- Ensuring a fair and practical implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES)
- Addressing critical skills shortages through enhanced apprenticeships and workforce planning
- Supporting the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles through consistent policy, infrastructure investment, and dealership readiness
MTAA says it welcomes the reappointment of The Hon Catherine King MP as Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, and acknowledges her continued leadership in shaping Australia’s transport and infrastructure agenda. MTAA also recognised the important role of The Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, in guiding policies that intersect with the transition to electric vehicles.
"We are confident that this new Ministry provides a platform for real progress across several areas vital to the future of our industry," Camm said.
"MTAA stands ready to work with government to deliver outcomes that strengthen our sector, benefit Australian consumers, and help prepare the national automotive industry for the next decade of change."
