MTA-trained apprentice Lucy Grimwood from Fleurieu Crash Repairs has won the SA PPG Colour Matching Competition which was recently held at the MTA’s Training and Employment Centre.
The competition is open to all Automotive Painting apprentices undertaking a Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology (AUR3216) in South Australia.
Lachlan Mosely from Eblen Collision Repairs took home 2nd place and Luke Rainsford-Green from Tom Howard Crash Repairs placed third.
The competition, described by PPG Representative and Automotive Refinishing expert Manny Grillo, is designed every year to push attendees beyond what they may face in the workshop saying, “These are hard colours to match in the competition. The conditions that we put apprentices through are tough, more so than what you would typically find in a workshop. The key in this trade is concentration and that will definitely get you over the line here.”
PPG representatives Tyson Jak, Manny Grillo, Peter Menillo, Rob Allevi and Joe Esposito, along with MTA Trainer and Assessor in Automotive Refinishing Matt MacDonald evaluated the apprentices competing.
There is currently a strong demand for Automotive Refinishing apprentices in South Australia and the MTA has forged a strong relationship with paint suppliers and host employers to ensure that those currently in training are receiving up to date industry materials and teaching methods.
