Mini recently commemorated the 60th anniversary of its legendary victory at the 1966 Gallaher 500-mile race, which later became a 1,000-kilometre event, at Mount Panorama Circuit, Bathurst. This iconic motorsport moment saw the Morris Mini Cooper S, driven by Australian Bob Holden and Finnish rally legend Rauno Aaltonen, secure an outright win and dominate the field, with Minis filling the first nine grid positions.
To honour this historic milestone, Mini brought together its passionate Australian community of owners, enthusiasts, and club members. As part of the celebrations, 25 classic and new Mini models took to the Mount Panorama Circuit for a special lap of honour, paying tribute to a victory that forever changed the sport.
Celebrating Australian Motorsport Heritage
Mini’s exceptional handling, agility and race-bred character were proven throughout the 1960s on Australian tracks, with multiple class wins and strong performances across touring car racing, rallying, and hill climbs. Today, Minis continue to compete in historic racing events and club motorsport competitions, proudly carrying forward the brand’s enduring motorsport legacy.
Mini’s Continued Success in Australia
The spirit of innovation and performance that defined Mini’s Bathurst triumph continues to drive the brand’s momentum. In 2025, Mini achieved its strongest year ever in Australia,
recording a 38 per cent increase in total vehicle sales. John Cooper Works models saw an outstanding 146 per cent surge, now representing 21 per cent of total Mini sales – the second highest sales share globally.
