Modern vehicle structures are made of various types of steels, DP, HSLA, PH, UHSS to mention a few. These steels can be in strength ranges of 480mpa to over a 1000mpa with a metallurgical structure much tighter than steel we were trained to weld. This requires welding machine settings to be much hotter to get penetration at the same time keeping the weld area cooler. Mild steel welding techniques are no longer applicable.

The I-CAR welding program trains technicians on the new processes required to get a safe weld on the new stronger steels.

Another feature of the I-CAR welding program is learning the correct process to apply Silicon Bronze (Mig Brazing). This process is a completly new skill set. It takes time to learn the correct way without melting the base metal. It requires different thinking to steel fusion welding. But once technicians learn the process they can then see the strength in the joint with no heat affect zone like steel welding.

Completing the I-CAR welding program gives technicians the confidence to complete safe welds and also improves cycle time as the welds being laid down now need minimal dressing.

The welding certification is a three stage process beginning with a two hour theory session delivered through the Virtual Online format. The second stage is a four hour ‘hands on’ practice session where the technicians will run through the certification welds under guidance from an instructor. The certification itself is an eight hour session where the staff member will be required to complete fifteen welds on high strength steel coupons to certification standard. Upon successful completion the staff member will gain a certification valid for three years and gain five I-CAR training points.

I-CAR Australia has a 95% pass rate for this program. You can book your course or find our more by clicking here.
