Electric vehicles have continued their growing popularity in South Australia, according to the latest sales statistics.

“South Australian electric vehicle sales have increased this year by 254 per cent,” Motor Trade Association CEO Darrell Jacobs said. “And for the first time ever in South Australia, battery electric vehicles have outsold hybrids.”

“Tesla commands its lead as the top EV brand in the State, but recent models released by BYD and other manufacturers are increasing competition in the race towards more affordable electric vehicles.”

The latest sales update comes as the announcement of the Federal Government’s proposed fuel efficiency standards looms large.  “A fuel efficiency standard will be the next big step towards the decarbonisation of transport” he said.

The standard would follow announcements by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to move the date banning the sale of combustion cars to 2035 and the newly elected New Zealand Government axing the Clean Car Discount scheme, referred to by some as the ‘ute tax’.

“South Australians still love their utes and 4X4s and so I urge decision makers not to forget the carrot in favour of the stick.”

Electric vehicles have continued their growing popularity in the Northern Territory. “Northern Territory electric vehicle sales have increased this year by 450 per cent,” Jacobs said.
