The Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is set to unveil an exhibition on the subject of speed.

'Speed: The Fast and the Curious' will showcase commissioned works by a host of Australian artists from Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), White Rabbit Gallery, the Laverty Collection as well as private owners.

Works include a range of automotive-inspired pieces including a 'sanluche'; a white three-wheeled Chinese vehicle common in China's cities.

Specialist in recycled automotive sculptures Michael Laubli will bring to life an armoured car to be driven around the museum.

MAMA curator Bianca Acimovic said that the exhibition will aim to capture the role of speed in Australian society.

“The fascination with speed is deeply embedded in the national consciousness.

“As a land of vast distances, so much of our sense of progress has been associated with the achievement of doing things faster.

“Going faster, and faster still, breaking records and getting the adrenalin pumping is a primal urge.

“The exhibition looks at speed in all its various forms, and its defining role in the make-up of Australian culture, and the Albury region in particular.”

Albury is home to Australia's first flat-four aero engine which was built in 1913 as well as Brad Jones V8 racing.

MAMA recently underwent a $10.5 million transformation.
