BYD has delivered its 100,000th new vehicle in Australia, marking a major milestone for the fast-growing new energy vehicle brand as it also commits an additional 30,000 vehicles to help meet local demand.
The landmark vehicle was a BYD Shark 6 Premium ute delivered to Brisbane customer Tim Shaw, with BYD General Manager Asia Pacific Liu Xueliang personally handing over the keys during his visit to Australia.
Since launching locally in November 2022 with the BYD Atto 3 mid-size SUV, BYD has expanded to a 10-model line-up and built a national network of more than 100 sales and service centres.
The family-sized BYD Sealion 7 SUV has emerged as the brand’s most popular fully electric model, while the recently launched BYD Atto 2 continues to gain traction with buyers seeking affordable EV technology. The Shark 6 Premium Super Hybrid has also become Australia’s top-selling pickup and plug-in hybrid among private buyers.
BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins said the company’s local growth had been significant.
“The growth of BYD Australia over the last three and a half years has been remarkable. Australian motorists want stylish, practical and affordable new energy vehicles, now more than ever,” Collins said.
At the same time, BYD has announced it will prioritise deliveries for Australian essential workers and increase supply to reduce wait times during strong demand for electric and ultra-efficient hybrid vehicles.
Doctors, nurses, teachers, police, fire and ambulance personnel, social workers and SES volunteers will be among those eligible for priority access, with BYD confirming an extra 30,000 vehicles will arrive throughout May and June, alongside further production increases expected in the third quarter.
Collins said the decision reflected the company’s broader responsibility to support Australians facing cost-of-living pressures.
“We will work closely with our national dealer network to provide priority access – not exclusivity – for those delivering critical services to the community, while maintaining availability for the broader public,” he said.
BYD said its vertically integrated production model allows it to rapidly scale output, helping it respond quickly to market demand while supporting customers who rely most on affordable mobility.
