BYD’s highly anticipated new compact EV, the Atto 1, has achieved a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, positioning it as one of the safest EVs entering the market.

The five-star rating applies to both Atto 1 variants and reflects the vehicle’s strong safety specification, advanced driver-assistance suite, and robust structural protection.

The Atto 1’s comprehensive standard safety suite includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Assist (LDA), Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and a direct driver-monitoring system - a level of safety equipment usually found in larger, more premium vehicles.

The model achieved impressive results across every major assessment category, including:

  • 82 per cent Adult Occupant Protection,
  • 86 per cent Child Occupant Protection,
  • 76 per cent Vulnerable Road User Protection,
  • 79 per cent Safety Assist.

In addition to clinching maximum points for side-impact and oblique pole testing, and whiplash protection, the Atto 1 also delivered strong Autonomous Emergency Braking performance across car-to-car, pedestrian, cyclist, motorcycle, and junction scenarios, reinforcing the effectiveness of its advanced driver-assistance systems.

“Safety is fundamental to BYD’s mission, so we’re pleased to see the Atto 1 recognised at the highest level by ANCAP,” COO of BYD Australia, Stephen Collins, said.

“This rating further cements our commitment to delivering world-class vehicles that combine leading technology, exceptional value, and uncompromising protection for drivers, passengers, and all road users.”

The Atto 1 is now available to order, starting at $23,990 excluding on-road costs, making it one of the most affordable BEVs on the Australian market.
