Mercedes-Benz has launched an Australian first by including a new truck safety system than can automatically initiate braking for pedestrians.
The Active Brake Assist 4 system has been rolled out across Mercedes-Benz Actros models in Australia and is now available for on-highway Mercedes-Benz Actros prime movers as well as the new Mercedes-Benz rigid models.
The break assist is based on next-generation radar technology and is part of the Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4) suite.
The new feature warns the driver of imminent collisions with moving pedestrians and simultaneously automatically initiates partial braking, which limits the need for drivers to avoid collisions by using emergency braking or a steering manoeuvre.
The automated alerts and braking initiated by pedestrian detection are active up to a speed of 50 km/h and is the first system of its kind in the world to offer these features.
