Compare the Market’s eighth annual Most Searched Car Brands (ital.) report shows that, for the sixth year in a row, Toyota was Australia’s most searched car brand in 2025.
Tesla maintains its spot as Australia’s second-most searched car brand three years in a row, while Mazda has now been overtaken by BYD, which is now Australia’s third-most searched brand.
Overall, across 155 countries, Toyota was the most-googled car brand with 57 countries searching for it the most, a place the brand has held since 2020. However, since 2022, Toyota’s been steadily declining.
On the other hand, BMW has been increasing its rankings steadily since 2023, rising to second place with 46 countries as it gains on Toyota. Tesla, however, has dropped from second to third, falling from 34 countries in 2024 to 17 in 2025.
Worldwide, BYD also saw a big increase in the rankings this year, rising from being the top search in one country in 2024 to seven in 2025, while Proton, GM and Renault made the top rankings, just as Audi, Mazda and Ford failed to make the cut.
Executive general manager of general insurance, Adrian Taylor, noted that Toyota will remain a popular brand for some time, but things are shifting.
“We’re seeing growing interest in EV only brands with many of these originating from the Chinese market. These EVs have become a more affordable option as governments and markets globally push for electric-powered passenger transport to reduce emissions,” Taylor said.
“We’ve also seen a big resurgence in some brands, most notably BMW, who is closing in on Toyota’s position in the rankings. There’s definitely been more competition this year, and BMW is now a serious contender for the top spot.”
