DPP changed its name recently from R. Condo and Sons to reflect the purchase of the business by Cos Condo from his father Ross in 2003. Since then Cos has been updating it with new equipment, methods and workflow. The result is a young (everybody is under 30), fast moving shop that is now setting out to build its reputation.
"You'd hardly the recognise the place if you known it five years ago," Cos says. "We've extended, changed the front, and added a wash bay and lunch room at the back, along with a new toilet and shower section."
On the equipment side, DPP now has a Globaljig, Gyspot inverter and MIG silicone bronze welders, Lowbake oven, a dedicated prep bay made from the old oven, dry sanding using two portable Festools and Glasurit paint residing in a spotless mixing room with The shop carries out all its own plastic repairs. It recently inveted in a CMO side lift which means that technicians working on bumpers and sills don't have to bend donw continuously and resk back injury.
The staff totals six. Cos manages the business and handles quoting using the inexpensive QCQ system.
Although the shop's output is limited by its staffing, it has attracted work from the big insurers like CGU, Lumleys, Vero, Allianz, RAA (preferred repairer) and a lot of fleet work. The shop has also hedged its bets with some diversification into air brushing on cars, motor bikes, and other items that call for special effects.
While insurers are the chief work providers, the shop is keen to appeal to the general public. In addition to its striking street appearance, the technicians wear polo shirts with the company name on the front and a list of services embroidered on the back.
"Where ever to boy go we get free advertising," Con says. "You'd be surprised how many people at the pub will ask us for a business card because they want to give us a job."
