Maintenance the key to clean, dry air

Comments Comments

Record rainfall and high humidity over the past several months has highlighted the need to maintain and upgrade workshop compressed air systems.

Often overlooked, a well-planned maintenance and upgrade program for both the compressor pump and all inline filters is essential.

In general, air compressors produce compressed air and moisture. The water is the result of the mechanics of compressing air – friction is created by forcing the air through an orifice.

Friction causes heat which transforms any moisture in the compressed air into gas, and when the air cools the gas turns to solids (condensation).

For instance, a 7.5 Kva (10Hp) compressor operating in a climate of 44°C with relative 40 per cent humidity can produce about 10 litres of condensation a day. The same compressor operating at 32°C with 70 per cent humidity can produce 50 litres a day.

The amount of condensation produced will vary with prevailing weather conditions, type of compressor (piston or screw) and geographical position.

Clean dry air reduces the risk of paint problems like humidity blisters, and therefore costly reworks, as well as air tool maintenance or replacement.

Also, with the advent of waterborne paint products, clean dry air assists the drying cycle. Air line contamination will also prevent inline service units and systems performing to their optimum capabilities.

During maintenance, replace any fabric type elements/cartridges, wash and clean synthesised bronze baffles/elements, clean filter bowls and check manual/auto drains.

Desiccant chemicals should be checked, inspected and topped up if necessary.

When looking at an upgrade, consideration should be given to the installation of a Supa Eliminator Air Dryer, if not already installed. This unit is not just a filter, but a complete moisture eliminating system.

The Supa Eliminator’s ultra-absorbent desiccant chemical delivers absolute moisture free- biodegradable super dry air which will not support bacteria. These economical units are available for compressors up to 74Kva (100hP)
