Smash repairers should stay on alert for any requests to send on money from a credit card transaction, as the towing scammers continue to target the automotive repair industry.
Greg Geary,manager at Accident Repair Centre, Thornleigh, NSW contacted AP&P to say that the business had just sent a second lot of money to the scammers when Geary read the story about the scam in the latest issue of the magazine and the shop owners managed to retrieve the money before it was collected.
The scammers are following are begining to vary the exact approach to the scam that AP&P reported online (www.paintandpanel.com.au/news/towing-scam-alert)but asked for the exact amounts of money reported.This time the scammer called himself David Smith instead of Peter Williams.
Accident Repair Centre has reported the scam to both the police and the Office of Fair Trading and was told by the police that this type of fraud is difficult to investigate.
