Attitudes are changing towards base coat application. A common scenario has been for the apprentice to take on the job of priming, and usually with a gun that is either expensive and not adequately taken care of, or a gun that has gone through the life cycle (clear or colour, then primer), or a low-cost alternative. Traditionally primer is applied as a thick layer – the reason for this generally comes down to poor performance of the primer gun and the fear of sand-through when sanding/blocking the primer.
3M is looking to change this view on primer application with introduction of the AccusprayTM HG09 primer gun.
The AccusprayTM HG09 primer gun incorporates a plastic design and patented disposable nozzle. The product is designed so that it does not compromise on quality of equipment or application of primer. The nozzle provides exceptional atomisation with minimal overspray.
The benefits of this are a flatter, smoother finish, which results in a reduction in the sanding and blocking time required to complete the process.

Utilises the full benefits of HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) with a 1.8mm nozzle and operating at a maximum pressure of 20 PSI (with 10 PSI under full trigger).
The nozzle containing the atomising head has been designed with 3M's Paint Preparation System adaptor, and will be useful for 10 to 20 uses.
Cleaning is a breeze
The plastic design makes it a breeze to clean. As primer does not like to stick to plastic, only minimal solvent is needed to clean the gun. The needle and handle can be easily wiped down to remove any primer. Also, as the atomising head is clear, seeing when the nozzle is clean is easy. During trials, 3M found that on average shops rated the ease of cleaning the primer gun twice as high as their current gun.
3M has had customers using the gun at mix ratios of 4:1:1 to 7:1:1. Shops found that the gun performed as well or better than their current gun in terms of spray pattern over spray ease-of-use.
Customers who have used the HG09 primer gun have confirmed savings from many of the system’s advantages, which include: reduction in primer and solvent consumption, decreased sanding time, less prep and clean-up time, and reduction in masking materials. 3M says this equates to approximately 50 cents per use.
