How the judging was done

Awards 2004

Paint & Panel's Autobody Repairer of the Year Awards began with nominations from bodyshop suppliers of parts, equipment and consumables. A shop could also self nominate.

The nominations were counted, and the shops with the most nominations in each region became the finalists for that region.

Two judges, representing the judging panel, then travelled around Australia to visit each of the finalists. They scored the shops on service, equipment, repair quality, presentation, management and layout.

Regional winners were then announced in the categories: large shop (12 employees or more), small shop (11 employees of less) and new shop (built in the last 18 months).

The regional winners are announced in this, the September/October issue of Australasian Paint & Panel. From those, the judging panel will select one shop in each category to become national winners.

Those three shops are to be announced in the November/December issue. The winners are presented with trophies at an award ceremony, this year to be held in Melbourne.

The 2004 awards have been sponsored by AAMI for small and large shops, and Nortons Abrasives for new shops. These companies generously provide the funding for the awards but they do not take part in the judging process.

There were two travelling judges this year. One was Fraser McEwing, editor of Paint & Panel. This was his second year on the panel. The other was Tom Holmes, a senior teacher in panel beating at the Mount Druitt TAFE in Sydney. Prior to teaching he owned his own smash repair shop.
