There are plenty of valuable labour time savings to be made simply by choosing the right products and processes for priming, say PPG. Once users got a taste of its next generation primer, DP4000 with its superior flexibility and performance, it instantly became a best selling primer and one of the company’s most popular products.

Now, DP4000 has become an even more versatile tool for improving productivity thanks to the release of two new versions in shades of spectral grey. Along with the original DP4000 mid-shade spectral grey G5 (D8505), there is now a lighter tone spectral grey G1 (D8501) and a darker tone spectral grey G7 (D8507). The two newcomers come with the same DP4000 features (see list below), while also providing users with the ability to mix combinations of different shades in order to prepare a primer formulation in any spectral grey tone from G1, G2, G3, in steps right up to G7. As a result, it’s easy to take advantage of the many benefits of mixing the correct spectral grey to go under each topcoat. PPG’s Paint Manager colour retrieval system provides information on the best shade of spectral grey to use as a groundcoat.

This process mimics the method used on virtually every vehicle manufacturer’s production line, where a sympathetic coloured or spectral grey primer is applied under topcoat colours. And it’s just as effective in refinish – mixing DP4000 in a spectral grey shade which is as close as possible in reflectance to the topcoat colour results in a consistent groundcoat tone across the repair area. Topcoat opacity can be achieved in the minimum number of coats which saves application labour time, reduces material usage and boosts profitability.

PPG’s DP4000 primer benefits include:

  • No need to sand new panels
  • After application, no need to sand before topcoat
  • Simple, one coat application and quick drying time
  • Choice of wet-on-wet mode or batch prime, then topcoat with Envirobase High Performance up to five days later
  • Seals off sensitive substrates and can be applied directly over small rub-throughs
  • Ability to mix a spectral grey tone to achieve the best results under topcoat colours
