ANCAP has extended its consumer warning over KGM vehicle safety specifications, revealing a second model has been supplied without airbags that were advertised as standard equipment.
The development follows last week’s article in the Paint & Panel eNewsletter, which reported ANCAP’s consumer alert concerning the KGM Musso EV dual-cab ute.
ANCAP has now confirmed the Musso EV’s sister vehicle, the battery-electric KGM Torres EVX mid-size SUV, was also supplied to customers without an advertised centre airbag. The issue affects vehicles in both Australia and New Zealand.
According to ANCAP, KGM marketed the Torres EVX as having eight airbags, including a centre airbag, in its vehicle specification brochure and website. However, vehicles supplied to customers have seven airbags.
The earlier Musso EV issue involved vehicles advertised with eight airbags but fitted with six.
ANCAP estimates approximately 100 Torres EVX vehicles are affected. By the end of July, around 33 had been sold in Australia and 70 in New Zealand. Australian sales commenced in October 2025, while New Zealand sales ran from March 2024 until March 2025.
ANCAP said customers who had already purchased a Torres EVX should be aware their vehicle’s safety specification may differ from that advertised, and warned the absence of the centre airbag may affect occupant safety in side-impact crashes.
KGM Australia has confirmed its marketing materials have since been updated to reflect the specification of Torres EVX vehicles currently on sale locally.
ANCAP has encouraged KGM to introduce a production change to fit a centre airbag. Petrol and hybrid versions of the Torres are not believed to be affected, with centre and knee airbags verified on locally available vehicles.
Existing owners with concerns have been advised to contact KGM or their local dealer, while buyers considering a new or used Torres EVX should be aware of the vehicle’s actual safety specification.
