As electric vehicles continue to gain market share, tyre manufacturers are increasingly developing products specifically engineered to meet the unique demands of battery-powered motoring.
Kumho Tyre Australia has expanded its range of EV-specific tyres, saying electric vehicles place greater demands on tyres through higher vehicle weights, instant torque delivery and the need to maximise driving range while maintaining low noise levels.
The company's dedicated range now spans six models designed for battery electric vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids, offering options across passenger cars, SUVs and performance applications.
Leading the range is the new PS71 EV, developed to improve driving dynamics through enhanced construction, lower rolling resistance and greater stability during rapid acceleration. Kumho says high-strength lightweight materials minimise tyre distortion while improving wet braking, steering response and overall efficiency.
Reducing tyre noise is another key focus. Optimised tread designs and the company's K-Silent polyurethane foam technology are designed to reduce cabin noise by up to five decibels, addressing one of the challenges that becomes more noticeable in quieter electric vehicles.
For electric SUVs and crossovers, the HP71 EV features reinforced construction, lower weight and enhanced rolling resistance to improve efficiency without compromising durability. Kumho says its 3D interlocking sipe technology and strengthened carcass are designed to cope with the higher loads typically associated with EV battery packs.
The Solus HS63 EV targets small and medium-sized electric vehicles, combining reduced rolling resistance with improved steering response and braking performance, while the touring-focused TA91 EV uses an advanced silica compound to improve wear resistance under the high-torque characteristics of electric drivetrains.
The TA91 EV also incorporates an asymmetrical tread design, noise-reducing tread block variation and K-Silent technology to deliver a quieter driving experience while maintaining grip in wet and dry conditions.
Several of the tyres are already fitted as original equipment on popular electric vehicles, including Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen, BYD and Chery models.
With consumer demand for electric vehicles continuing to grow, manufacturers are increasingly highlighting that tyres developed specifically for EVs can play an important role in improving efficiency, extending driving range, reducing noise and delivering the durability needed to cope with the distinctive operating characteristics of battery-powered vehicles.
