Australia's peak body for the novated leasing industry says another record month for electric vehicle sales demonstrates the continuing importance of the Federal Government's Electric Car Discount in making EV ownership more affordable.

The National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) pointed to the latest sales figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council, which showed battery electric vehicles accounted for more than 23 per cent of all new vehicle sales in June 2026.

More than 32,500 battery electric vehicles were sold during the month, lifting EV market share above the previous monthly record set in May and representing a threefold increase from the 7.6 per cent share recorded in June 2025.

NALSPA CEO Rohan Martin said the results showed the Electric Car Discount continued to play a major role in helping Australians transition to lower-emission vehicles.

Martin said demand was being driven by a combination of cost-of-living pressures, volatile fuel prices, a growing range of available EV models and the certainty provided by the Government's decision to continue the Electric Car Discount.

He said the policy was particularly important for working families in outer metropolitan areas, where longer travel distances made the lower running costs of electric vehicles especially attractive but higher purchase prices remained a barrier.

Martin also highlighted the increasing popularity of novated leasing, saying it allowed buyers to reduce the upfront and ongoing cost of EV ownership through GST savings, lower taxable income and predictable vehicle running costs.

He noted that newer brands including Zeekr, Jaecoo and Geely were becoming increasingly popular choices among Australians purchasing electric vehicles through novated leases.

While welcoming the strong sales momentum, Martin said maintaining policy support would be essential if Australia was to continue increasing EV adoption.

He also called for greater investment in public, workplace and home charging infrastructure, arguing that accessible charging would be critical to supporting future growth in electric vehicle ownership.

The association believes the latest sales figures demonstrate that financial incentives, combined with expanding model choice and charging infrastructure, will continue to play a central role in Australia's transition to electric mobility.
