NSW RTA confirms RWO legislation

The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority has confirmed it is still planning to ban repairable write-offs from NSW roads.

In a letter dated 21 June 2010 and made available by the NSW Motor Traders' Association, the RTA's acting chief executive Ann King has confirmed that the NSW Government will introduce legislation to prohibit the registration of NSW registered written-off vehicles from August 2010.

"All NSW registered written-off vehicles will be recorded as statutory write-offs after the introduction of the reforms, and will therefore not be permitted to be registered anywhere in Australia (with some limited exemptions)," King said in her letter.

"These written-off vehicles will still be able to be purchased and sold but only for parts or scrap metal."

Former roads minister David Campbell announced the reforms, which King described as being "the result of extensive consultation with a wide range of industry and regulatory stakeholders, including major insurers, auction houses, metal recyclers, motor dealers and repairers, the NSW Police Force, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, the Motor Traders' Association, the NSW Office of Fair Trading, other Australian jurisdictions an the general public".
