SHITBOX RALLY 2020 SPRING TRAVELS FROM MACKAY, QLD TO DARWIN, NT THIS OCTOBER

Look out Mackay, Darwin and towns in-between - 550 people in crazy cars are headed your way this October. These are not your average cars – this is Shitbox Rally 2020 Spring and it’s going to be one heck of an adventure.

It’s not a race and vehicles must be worth less than $1,000 (aka “a shitbox” hence the name of the rally) and there are plenty of prizes being dished out for the biggest fundraiser, best dress up, craziest looking car and more.

Shitbox Rally is Cancer Council’s biggest independent fundraiser with the 2020 Spring rally goal set to $2 million with overall funds since the rallies began in 2009 reaching a massive $22 million.

Teams of two in 275 cars will leave Mackay, QLD on Saturday 10 October 2020 in the morning. Then after seven days of driving almost 3,500kms on dusty, dirty, mostly unsealed roads with six stopovers in remote locations, they will cross the finish line in Darwin on Friday October 16 - some cars simply won’t make it.

The rally brings together people from all over the country and overseas who want an adventure, a challenge and crave something different, something life changing but most importantly, it’s for those who want to raise much needed money for charity.

James Freeman who founded Box Rallies (Shitbox and Mystery Box Rally) after losing both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other said:  “The route for the Spring Rally will take us through parts of remote outback Australia, so we can add revenue back into the community. We will drive up the middle of the Great Dividing Range and a reasonable way up Cape York Peninsula before heading West. This route will feature a lot of wild, heavily varied terrain, plenty of bull dust, plenty of river crossings and definitely not for the faint of heart. 11 years of Shitbox and 50% of this route will be new to the rally.” he said.

Many of the participants have been affected by cancer in one way or another. Whether it be parents, family, close friends, people they know or themselves, personally, who have battled or are battling cancer. The rally not only wants to raise awareness and money for Cancer Council, but also wants to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.

Thanks to eleven years of Shitbox Rally fundraising, the Cancer Council has been able to fund ground-breaking cancer research projects.
