The United Nations General Assembly has flagged road safety targets as a core focus for two of its long term developmental goals.

The Global Goals for Sustainable Development and the Global Plan of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety will be actioned to target road injury prevention.

The resolution builds upon the 'Brasilia Declaration' which was passed in November last year to endorse standard fitment of active safety systems.

This includes technologies such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and ABS for motorcycles.

Stop the Crash Partnership chairman David Ward has welcomed the UN General Assembly's call to action on greater regulation on global crash prevention.

"Today's UN resolution is a significant step forward in vehicle and road safety.

“The Stop the Crash Partnership was created to promote active safety systems with a proven track record in crash avoidance.

“The recognition and endorsement of this approach by the UN will help accelerate the adoption of the legislation required by governments across the globe to mandate these life saving technologies."

If successfully implemented the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety will see schemes commit to halving road deaths by 2020.
