The new car industry has reportedly scored its best first-half sales results ever according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

A total of 128,569 new cars were sold in June alone, boosting its half-yearly count to 598,140 – a 3.4 per cent increase on the same period last year.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber believes numbers will continue to climb.

“The end of the financial year historically is always very busy for the industry but this was an exceptional month.

“This time the final month of the financial year led right into a Federal election and yet despite some suggestions this may stifle consumer sentiment, the market continued its strong momentum.

“Without any doubt this proves that competition is fierce, this is providing an important stimulative effect on our economy, and the current market environment is at its healthiest in decades by delivering affordable vehicles that are attractive to customers.

“Consumers are recognising the great value generated by this competition and have responded accordingly off the back of record low interest rates.”

In terms of most popular buys, SUVs dominated with small SUV sales up 18.2 per cent on June last year and SUVs up 8.9 per cent.

Passenger motor vehicles dipped 4.5 per cent while 4X4 pick-ups and cab-chassis' sales shot up 5.9 per cent from the same period last year.

The Hyundai i30 emerged as the best selling model in June, driving 6432 vehicles out the door.
