For the second consecutive year, the number of vehicle thefts in Australia have risen, according to recent statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The ABS figures showed theft had reached its highest levels since 2012, with incidents increasing by 9% from 51,525 victims in 2015 to 56,086 victims in 2016.

Victoria was seen as the main contributor to the issue, with theft increasing by 25%, while incidents in Queensland and South Australia also rose by 19% and 10% respectively.

All remaining jurisdictions experienced decreases in the number of victims of these offences recorded by police since 2015.

Across all states and territories, motor vehicles were most likely to have been stolen from an outside buildings or in residential zones, which includes a garage, driveway or carport.
