Insurer AAMI has revealed Canberra as the biggest hotspot for vehicle on animal collisions in Australia.

Despite Canberra being the number one region, NSW had seven regions in the top 10, making it the state with the most animal collisions in the country.

The report, which analysed 20,000 incidents nationwide, showed cooler months to be the most dangerous for drivers and animals.

AAMI spokesperson Ashleigh Paterson said the locations were of little suprise considering the proximity to bushland and high wildlife density areas.

“As we enter the cooler months, driving conditions change due to the shorter days and poorer weather conditions.

“This change also means motorists are sharing the road more often with animals as their peak travel times are during dawn or dusk.

“Across all states, kangaroos are reportedly the most commonly hit animal, with four out of five claims attributed to kangaroos.

“Wombats, cattle and wallabies are also some of the frequently hit animals.”

The AAMI Collision Report top hotspots across the state are:

    1. Canberra
    2. Heathcote
    3. Cooma
    4. Goulburn
    5. Queanbeyan
    6. Broken Hil
    7. Dubbo
    8. Jindabyne
    9. Muswellbrook
    10. Bendigo
