BASF's coatings division has won the iF design award in the automobiles/vehicles category for its paint technology for passive temperature management.

The functionality of paints is playing an increasing role in the field of automotive OEM coatings. BASF's new paint system utilises a basecoat which is transparent to high-energy near infrared radiation and also uses a near infrared reflecting filter.

BASF head of pigments, dispersions & innovative colours Stephan Schwarte highlighted the paint's reduction in the vehicle surface temperature. He also pointed out the reduced need to utilise air conditioning for temperature control as part of its success.

“Factors such as A/C regulation have a major impact on the range of a vehicle, particularly in the field of electromobility.

“Our technology reduces energy consumption and thus optimises the vehicle's efficiency.”
