Many panel shop operators throughout the nation vent their frustration at not being able to secure apprentices in for their panel or paint workshops. For some the cost of engaging an apprentice can be an issue.
This issue is being addressed by the federal government which recently announced the Apprentice Kickstart Bonus program.
Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced $100 million would be spent on the new program which aims to support up to 21,000 young Australians entering traditional trades this summer.
It is only available from 1 December 2009 to 28 February 2010. There will also be extra funding for pre-apprenticeship training with more information to be announced early next year.
The Apprentice Kickstart Bonus is an employer incentive designed to counteract the impact of the global recession on commencements and retention of young people in traditional trade Australian Apprenticeships.
This program applies to employers who employ an Australian Apprentice aged 19 years and under between 1 December 2009 and 28 February 2010 in a qualification leading to a traditional trade occupation and who also meet eligibility requirements under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.
The Bonus, which is payable in addition to existing incentives, is a total of $3,350 paid in installments of $850 and $2,500.
